Is satay a side dish or a main at your party?

Side dish: satay is one of many dishes on the table, alongside things like popiah, kueh pie tee, finger food and desserts. Guests take a few sticks each, so 3 to 5 per person is plenty.

Main: satay is one of the main foods your guests will fill up on, for example at a dinner gathering with only one or two other dishes. Plan on 8 to 10 sticks per person.

Adjusting for your guests

  • Young children usually eat less, so you can count two children as roughly one adult.
  • Teens and big eaters: aim for the top of each range.
  • Lunch or tea-time events with lots of other food: the lower end of each range is usually enough.
  • Dinner parties and longer events: guests tend to keep going back, so aim higher.

Tips for ordering satay for a party

  • Order at least 48 hours ahead. Satay isn't available on Sundays or public holidays.
  • Satay is best enjoyed within 2 hours of delivery.
  • Cut the ketupat into cubes and serve them with the satay sauce for dipping.
  • Round out the spread with a DIY Popiah Set, Kueh Pie Tee Set or Fortune Finger Food Platter.
